Who We Are

Cornmill Press began on a farm in Scotland, in a spare room of the converted 18th century cornmill where we lived at the time. A career novelist myself, I know how difficult it is to break into the increasingly competitive world of mass-market publishing. Likewise, as a writer whose books often resist easy classification, I know how much harder that makes it to get that break.

With Cornmill Press, I wanted to provide a home for writers of niche and genre-defying books. As such, my “guinea pig” publication was a reprint of my own first novel, The Other Eden, which had by then gone out of print, but which still garnered requests for copies. From there, I went on to publish other people’s work. The titles Cornmill Press publishes run the gamut in terms of genre: novels, memoirs, poetry, multi-media and second or third editions of beloved but out-of-print books, even fanzines. The one thing they have in common is excellent writing.

Obviously, publishing only niche books on a shoestring budget requires commitment from our writers as well as ourselves to make sure those books see the light of day. Cornmill Press authors understand that they will be responsible for much of their own publicity, and work hard along with us to make a space for themselves in the crowded literary world. The nature of our business also means that most of our books begin as ebooks with a print on demand option, moving to full print runs if interest makes that viable.

If you would like us to consider your work for publication, please look at the Contact & Submissions guidelines. We also offer pre-publication editing services, from simple proofreads to developmental editing, priced accordingly. Please contact us for further information on any of these services.
